Geography

The Kingdom of Denmark is located in Northern Europe forming part of Scandinavia with Norway and Sweden. Denmark only has one actual land border - to the south with Germany where the border is approx. 42 miles (68 km) long.

The size of Denmark is comparable to that of Massachusetts or Nova Scotia. Denmark borders the Baltic Sea to the south, the North Sea (or Vesterhavet (the Western Sea) which is the Danish name for this part of the Sea) to the west, Skagerrak to the north, and Kattegat and Oresund to the east.

Denmark is formed by the peninsula Jutland and islands (and it is Jutland that shares a border with Germany), Funen and islands, Zealand, Lolland, Falster and islands and Bornholm and islands. Of the 407 named islands, approx. 80 are populated. The coastline stretches approx. 4,500 miles (7,300 km).

The capital is Copenhagen situated on the eastern part of Zealand by Oresund.

In addition to the North European part of the country, the Kingdom of Denmark also includes a self-governing territory near North America - Greenland - as well as an autonomous territory in the North Atlantic Ocean - the Faroe Islands.

Denmark's highest point is Møllehøj (near Skanderborg) at approx. 561 feet (170.86 m), and the largest lake is Arresø at approx. 15 square miles (39.5 square kilometers).
