Happiest People in the World

Denmark is the happiest country in the world!

Once more, a report ranks Denmark highest on the list of most content nations. This time the ranking is done by the highly respected organization OECD.

In May 2009, Forbes.com reported that OECD - the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development - has released a report showing that happiness levels are highest in northern European countries - with Denmark as the number one country, followed by Finland and the Netherlands.

In 2007, international scientific surveys of happiness carried out by Leicester University as well as Cambridge University in England showed that the small kingdom of Denmark is home to the happiest people in the world.

Survey: Denmark happiest country in the world

If you want to visit a magic kingdom and soak in the atmosphere of the happiest place on Earth, you might want to schedule your vacation accordingly.

“Over the past 30 years, in survey after survey, this nation of five and a half million people, the land that produced Hans Christian Andersen, the people who consume herring by the ton, consistently beat the rest of the world in the happiness stakes,” said correspondent Morley Safer in a Feb. 17 2008 CBS News 60 Minutes story highlighting Denmark. ABC News 20/20 also reported on the phenomena, saying the Danes feel "tryghed" – the Danish word for "tucked in" – like a snug child. The news were also reported by the Today Show at MSNBC (click here to watch video).

In August 2008, Scott Vogel at the Washington Post explored the reasons for the happiness of the Danes in his feature article "Why Are the Danes So Happy? It's the Simple Things".

In May 2009, Forbes.com published the news of the OECD report outlining how the report looked at subjective well-being, defined as life satisfaction and whether people felt like their lives were dominated by positive experiences and feelings, or negative ones. Read the article from Forbes.com: "World's Happiest Places" by Lauren Sherman.
