Bornholm - Venice of the North
|
|
Just like many other beautiful and idyllic islands around the world, Bornholm also exerts a powerful attraction on cruises. With one of the largest landing wharves in Northern Europe, a wealth of opportunities to enjoy experiences as plentiful as the sand on the seashore, and culture and art history second to none, Bornholm is worth visiting time and again.

Ideal for day-trippers Ideal for day-trippers, for example, are the carefully planned town and countryside rambles and bus outings headed by a guide. Here, depending on the individual programme, you can obtain a detailed and informative insight into the history, handicrafts and museums of Bornholm, as well as the flora and fauna of the island.

Did you know that Bornholm’s burial chambers, also called “gallery graves” are older than the pyramids of Egypt… or that because of its fineness the beach sand of south Bornholm is used in egg timers and exported… or that the third largest wood in Denmark grows on Bornholm, abounding in amongst other things wild orchids, rare owls and butterflies?
Venice of the North With approx. 150 km of coastline and an area of 527 square km, the island lends itself instinctively to shorter stays. Do not be taken in by the size of the island, however. Bornholm is not called the “Venice of the North” without reason, either, for even over 100 years ago artists from the whole of Europe discovered the special light conditions on the island. The Baltc Sea, with its deep colours and steep cliffs, its natural diversity and long sunny days, is the result of a veritable invasion of artists.
Famous painters made their debuts here, and Bornholm’s glass-making art is on everybody’s lips these days as well as being a household name throughout the world. Ceramicists export their skilfully crafted handiwork to many countries. During your stay, there will be a great many opportunities to acquire a memento of Bornholm. Even on the landing quay, you will find a selection of art shops at your service.
Something for everybody The Green Isle, Scandinavia rolled into one, Artists’ Island, the Rocky Island of the Baltic, the Island of the Nightingales, Cherry Blossom Island, Pearl of the Baltic… we confer may different names on the things we love…
Precisely because of the variety of possible excursion options on the island, it is advisable to put yourself in the confident hands of a guide. Enthusiasm and a love of Bornholm are characteristic of their outings. Needless to say, various tours and themes are on offer. There’s something for every holidaymaker and visitor here.
Golden Bornholmer If you opt for one of the bus trips, you will certainly come across a golden Bornholmer well worth tucking into: crisp, tender herring smoked over an open alder wood fire for three or four hours. You can order this national dish in one of the many earthy, old smokehouses. Some connoisseurs skilfully manage to work the bones loose from the fish, while others help them down with a genuine Bornholm Beer and/or aquavit or snaps. The culinary range has much to offer.
Certainly, it is not altogether a coincidence that you will find yourself encountering a great many half-timbered houses, round churches and other historical buildings. Many of these buildings did long years of service as fortifications and places of refuge. Did you know that Bornholm was occupied by the townspeople of Lübeck for more than 50 years? Anyone with the time and inclination can make use of our extensive network of cycle ways. More than 250 km of undisturbed cycle ways criss-cross the island. Bicycles can be hired in Rønne.
