Danish design and lifestyle hotels
|
|
To many people, a hotel and a hotel room is not only a place to stay and sleep for one or more nights; the hotel should also be an experience in itself. - Design and lifestyle hotels are an international hit, particularly in a country like Denmark which boasts proud design traditions, and where Copenhagen is at the very forefront.
Radisson SAS Royal Hotel is the worlds first design hotel, and today, it has reached an iconic status. The hotel was finished in 1960 and is a great example of modern functionalism. The Danish architect Arne Jacobsen not only designed the hotel but also the interior from cutlery, door handles to the classic chairs such as the "Egg" and the "Swan". Room 606 still features Arne Jacobsen's original layout from 1960 – you are welcome to book it or take a peek inside if it is not already occupied. www.radissonsas.com
Hotel Skt. Petri is housed in a beautiful functionalist building from 1933, originally designed by the architect Vilhelm Lauritzen. The hotel is the only Danish hotel which is a member of the international association "Design Hotels". Up until a few years ago, the building was home to a warehouse, and in connection with the refurbishment, all interior was developed with a view to changing it into a hotel - from sofas, bedside tables, bar chairs etc. The Danish artist Per Arnoldi is responsible for the characteristic colour scheme of the hotel. www.sktpetri.dk
In Hotel Fox, all 61 rooms are completely different. When the hotel was re-decorated in 2005, they selected 21 international artists and gave them carte blanche to show off their talent. The outcome is a unique hotel which you will not find any other place in the world. For that reason, Hotel Fox is not part of the hotel classification system, because even though the hotel is at the top end when it comes to facilities, you can not be sure to find exactly the required two chairs and a desk, because the artist might have chosen to furnish the entire room with one big bed. www.hotelfox.dk
The hotel is designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen AS and opened in 2001 - the architect company is by the way the same as designed the fantastic Terminal 3 in Copenhagen's Airport. The hotel is Nordic through and through; the design is bright and light and the interior is made with Scandinavian design in mind, e.g. Arne Jacobsen's furniture classic the "Egg". Sneak a peek at: several of the chairs are signed by famous people who have stayed at the hotel. www.hilton.com
Hotel Astoria is considered somewhat of an architectural pearl within the functionalist tradition. It was built in 1935 and completely renovated and reopened in 2007. The Danish design company GUBI, which also made furniture for e.g. the Museum of Modern Art in New York and DANHOSTEL Copenhagen City, was responsible for the interior and a big part of the specially designed furniture. They have, however, maintained a historic room that remains as it was back in 1935. www.dgi-byen.dk/hotelastoria
This lifestyle hotel was refurbished in 2006 by leading Danish architects who used as their basis the Scandinavian design tradition. And the hotel also distinguishes itself by housing Absolut Icebar Copenhagen – the only one of this kind in Denmark. www.hotel27.dk
