Danes love music – from huge open-air festivals to small venues playing all kinds of music: jazz, blues, folk, salsa, pop and rock. If you want to explore Danish nightlife, chances are that you will be listening to live music. If you are looking to sample the Danish nightlife, there are also great options for taking in some live music at all the new bars, which often have a club culture or disco.
In Copenhagen the nightlife takes off late, but once started is near non-stop. At most venues nothing really gets going until after midnight. However, the warm-up starts earlier in the evening at the countless cafés and bars in the city centre and districts of Nørrebro, Vesterbro and Østerbro. Later on the scene shifts to the discos, live-music venues and clubs. The underground scene and club culture is best sampled in and around the Nørrebro district, Copenhagen’s bubbling, multiethnic ‘melting pot’.
Pop, dance and jazz If you are more into chart music and the latest pop, a good bet for an all-nighter would be the discos on Østerbro or the Baron Boltens Gård club off Kgs. Nytorv. This is also the place to see and be seen among models and wannabees trying to slip into the private member’s club. For those into jazz, the new Danish jazz revival is best experienced at Copenhagen Jazz House in the city centre. Read more about music and nightlife in Copenhagen
Århus is famous well beyond Denmark’s borders for its happening music scene. Some of the biggest names on the Danish music scene started out here, and Århus is still a hothouse for up-and-coming bands. Not surprisingly therefore, there are live gigs playing every evening at the city’s many venues. Enjoy a cappuccino, brandy or just the atmosphere in ”the Heart of the City”: the Latin Quarter. Or sample the city’s speciality tipple known as “Århus sættet”: A beer from the city’s own brewery - Ceres – chased down with a genuine Arnbitter.
Theatresports and tango Throughout the year, the city’s small stages pull in the crowds with mad-cap competitions in improvisation drama and off-beat acts. Theatresports and stand-up comedy are just two of the disciplines that have gained huge popularity. Latin American rhythms, seductive tangos or pure and unadulterated rock – there are all kinds of ways of working up a sweat and dancing till you drop at one of the city’s many music venues. Århus also hosts mammoth rock events such as the annual Århus Open Air, Grøn Koncert and Rockshow. Read more about music and nightlife in Århus

Wherever you head for, you’ll be served up Albani, the local lager brewed right in the heart of the city. The city’s cultural palace, Brandts Klædefabrik, contains everything from a restaurant and café to a music venue and cinema. If you happen to be visiting in summer, be sure not to miss the open air concerts in Kongens Have and Den fynske Landsby. Read more about music and nightlife in Odense
