Denmark's first public hydrogen fuelling station

On September 24 2008, Denmark’s first public hydrogen fuelling station opened in Ringkøbing. The station which delivers fuel to the so-called fuel cell hybrid cars is the first of its kind in Denmark, but looking ahead to the UN climate summit in 2009, the plan is to open more similar stations other places in the country.

Denmark's first public hydrogen fuelling stationEvery time the oil prices rise, the world starts speculating in alternatives to the expensive, black liquid. Renewable energy can easily supply electricity to the transport sector and in this way contribute to pollution-free and low-noise powering of cars and other vehicles at the same time as the efficient utilisation of energy in the vehicles is more than doubled in comparison to petrol-fuelled cars.

The challenge, however, is to refuel the vehicles as fast as when using petrol, and to make the vehicles drive the same distance on a full tank. A solution is to combine the best characteristics of batteries with the best qualities of hydrogen fuel cells in a hybrid solution. The batteries ensure an efficient utilisation of the energy while the hydrogen and fuel cells make it possible to fill up the vehicle fast and drive the same distance as on petrol.

In Denmark, the company ”Hydrogen Link Vestjylland” develop hybrid electric vehicles and hydrogen fuelling stations, and they are also the instigators of the opening of the hybrid fuelling station in Ringkøbing.

The hydrogen for the vehicles is created through the fission of water by use of electricity from wind turbines, so this is a process completely without emission of C02.
